Data and AI
‘Big data’ analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) have the potential to transform life sciences, health services and the economy. The application of computational biology, informatics, AI and machine learning to linked health and civic datasets opens up the possibility of moving beyond population health and service evaluation projects, into studies that address a broad range of clinical research questions and real-world evaluation of medical technologies and diagnostics.
Building on the success of Connected Health Cities, the NHSA has expanded this network of health and civic data system leaders across the North. The NHSA’s Data and AI group is predominantly a legacy network of member representatives from our Connected Health Cities Programme (2015-20).
In June 2023 it was announced that the NHSA would be part of two Digital Health Hubs awarded to the North of England. A share of £16.5 million was awarded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) to establish five new digital health hubs across England.
We have real strengths across the North in Data & AI disciplines and a track record of demonstrating the value of well-curated health data, with appropriate system and citizen engagement. We have shown that this can drive improvement in the provision of care and create an economic asset across the North.
